What Is Hair And How To Keep It Healthy

Here's something most people don't realise: hair is dead.

Every strand on your head is made of dead cells. No blood supply. No nervous system. No ability to repair itself. Once it's damaged, it's damaged. You can mask it with products, coat it with silicone, make it look healthier, but you can't actually heal it.

So why does hair care matter?

Because the scalp is alive. And everything starts there.

How Hair Actually Works

You have hundreds of thousands of follicles on your scalp. Each one is a tiny factory, producing hair cells inside, pushing them upward. As new cells form, older cells die and get forced toward the surface. That's your hair, a continuous stream of dead protein being pushed out of your head.

Each follicle produces multiple hairs over your lifetime. The health of the follicle determines the health of the hair it produces. Damage the follicle, and you damage every strand that comes after.

This is why scalp care matters more than most people think.

Growing Healthy Hair

If you want better hair, start with what you put in your body.

Diet matters. Your hair is made of protein. If you're not eating enough, your body prioritises vital organs over hair production. The result: thin, weak, dull hair that breaks easily.

What helps:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, sardines, flax seeds, avocados
  • Protein: meat, fish, eggs, beans, tofu
  • Iron: red meat, spinach, lentils
  • Biotin: eggs, nuts, whole grains

You don't need supplements if you're eating properly. But if your diet is inconsistent, your hair shows it.

Hydration. Dehydration dries out the scalp and the hair. Most people don't drink enough water. Coffee and alcohol don't count, they're diuretics that actually dehydrate you further.

Carry water with you. Drink throughout the day. If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated.

After alcohol, drink water. Every time. A glass of water after every alcoholic drink. Your hair, and your morning, will thank you.

The Scalp Is Everything

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Most people ignore this completely, focusing only on the hair itself.

Blood flow. Your follicles need nutrients delivered via blood. Scalp massage isn't just relaxing, it promotes circulation, keeps the scalp flexible, and supports healthier hair growth. A minute or two while you shampoo makes a difference over time.

Cleanliness. A clogged follicle can't produce healthy hair. Buildup from products, dead skin, oil, and pollution all accumulate. Regular washing with the right shampoo keeps follicles clear.

Don't over-wash. But don't under-wash either. Too much washing strips natural oils. Too little lets buildup accumulate. For most people, two to three times a week is the balance.

Watch the water temperature. Hot water feels good but strips oils from the scalp, causing dryness. Warm water to wash. Cool water to rinse.

What Damages Hair

Since hair can't repair itself, prevention matters more than treatment.

Heat. Blow dryers, straighteners, curling irons, all of them damage hair over time. Use heat protection products. Use the lowest effective temperature. Give your hair heat-free days.

Sun. UV rays break down hair proteins, just like they damage skin. Wear a hat. Use products with UV protection.

Chemicals. Colour, bleach, relaxers, perms, they all alter hair structure. This isn't a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to do them properly, with quality products, and to care for chemically treated hair accordingly.

Friction. Rough towel drying, aggressive brushing, tight hairstyles that pull at the root, all cause damage and breakage over time.

The Right Products Help

You can do everything right, diet, hydration, gentle handling, and still undermine it all with the wrong shampoo or conditioner.

Sulphate-free for most people. Hydrating if you're dry. Clarifying occasionally if you use a lot of product. The right tools matter too, a good brush, a quality dryer, heat protection that actually works.

The Bottom Line

You can't fix damaged hair. You can only prevent future damage and wait for healthier hair to grow in its place.

That means: care for your scalp, feed your body properly, protect from damage, and be patient. Hair grows about half an inch per month. Significant improvement takes time.

There are no shortcuts. But there is a system. And it works.
