How To Wash And Treat Your Hair Properly

You've been washing your hair your entire life. You're probably doing it wrong.

Not catastrophically wrong. Just... inefficiently. Missing steps. Using the wrong products. Treating washing as something to rush through rather than something that actually matters.

It matters.

The Shampoo Reality

Shampoo has one job: clean the scalp and hair. That's it. But not all shampoos do this equally, and more isn't better.

Sulphates strip. Most cheap shampoos contain sulphates — they're what makes the foam. They also strip natural oils aggressively, leaving hair dry and scalp irritated. Switch to sulphate-free if your hair feels dry or your scalp gets flaky.

Parabens accumulate. They're preservatives. They build up over time. They're unnecessary if you buy quality products.

One wash might not be enough. If you use styling products, if you've been sweating, if it's been a few days — the first wash removes surface dirt. The second wash actually cleans. Rinse and repeat isn't just a saying.

But don't over-wash. Every wash removes natural oils. Your scalp produces these oils to protect hair and skin. If you're washing daily, you're fighting your body's natural protection system. Most people need to wash two to three times a week. Your scalp adjusts.

The Technique

Wet thoroughly first. Hair needs to be fully saturated before shampoo touches it. Otherwise the product concentrates in patches instead of distributing evenly.

Scalp, not lengths. Focus shampoo on your scalp, not down the hair shaft. The scalp is where oil, dirt, and buildup accumulate. The lengths get cleaned when you rinse.

Massage, don't scratch. Use your fingertips, not your nails. Massage the scalp in circular motions. This cleans, stimulates blood flow, and feels good. Scratching irritates and can damage the scalp.

Rinse completely. Shampoo residue dulls hair and irritates scalp. When you think you've rinsed enough, rinse more.

Finish cold. A cold water rinse at the end closes the hair cuticle. This locks in moisture, adds shine, and calms the scalp. It takes ten seconds and makes a visible difference.

Conditioning

Conditioner does what shampoo can't: it replaces moisture, smooths the cuticle, and makes hair manageable.

Not at the scalp. Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends only. Your scalp produces its own oils. Conditioner at the roots leads to flat, greasy-looking hair.

Let it sit. Most people rinse immediately. Give it a minute or two. The longer it sits, the more it penetrates. Quick rinses give quick results — which is to say, minimal results.

Choose by need, not by brand. Dry hair needs hydrating conditioner. Damaged hair needs repairing conditioner. Fine hair needs volumising conditioner. Curly hair needs curl-specific conditioner. What your friend uses doesn't matter. What your hair needs does.

Silicone-free for long-term health. Silicones coat the hair and make it feel smooth immediately. But they build up over time, weigh hair down, and prevent actual moisture from penetrating. Fine occasionally. Daily use creates problems.

Treatments And Masques

Conditioner is maintenance. Treatments are repair.

Once a week minimum. A treatment or masque does in one application what daily conditioner can't. Deeper penetration. More intensive ingredients. Actual restoration of the hair's internal structure.

The hot towel trick. Apply your treatment. Wet a towel with hot water, wring it out, wrap your hair. The heat opens the cuticle and drives the product deeper into the hair shaft. Leave it for ten to twenty minutes. The results are noticeably better than applying and rinsing quickly.

Ten minutes is the minimum. Product instructions often say three to five minutes. That's the minimum for any effect at all. For actual results, longer is better.

Match treatment to problem. Dry hair: hydrating treatment. Damaged or over-processed hair: repairing treatment. Flat or thin hair: volumising treatment. Curly or frizzy hair: smoothing treatment. Colour-treated hair: colour-protecting treatment.

The Rinse

How you finish matters.

Remove excess product. After a treatment, use a towel to gently remove the thick residue before rinsing. This ensures you're rinsing the treatment through, not just off.

Cool water to close. We said it for shampoo. It applies even more after conditioning and treatments. The cuticle opens with heat and product. Cold water seals it shut, locking everything in.

Don't rub dry. Pat or squeeze with a towel. Rubbing creates friction, roughs up the cuticle you just sealed, and causes breakage. Gentle pressure only.

The Right Products Make The Difference

The technique matters. But so does what you're using. Cheap shampoo with sulphates, conditioner full of silicones, treatments that don't actually penetrate — you can have perfect technique and still get mediocre results.

The Summary

Washing hair isn't complicated. It's just more involved than most people treat it.

Right products. Right technique. Right frequency. A treatment once a week. Cold rinse to finish.

Do this consistently and you'll notice the difference within a month. Your hair isn't fighting you because it's "difficult." It's fighting you because you've been cutting corners.

Stop cutting corners.
