Hair Extensions Cyprus: Why We Use Great Lengths
Hair extensions are one of those services where the gap between good and bad is enormous. A bad set of extensions can damage your natural hair, look obviously fake, tangle within weeks, and leave you worse off than when you started. A good set should be undetectable, move naturally, last for months, and leave your own hair in the same condition — or better — when they come out.
That's why we work exclusively with Great Lengths at HAIR ETC. STUDIO. Not because they're the cheapest option (they're not), but because after working with multiple brands over the years, nothing else matches the hair quality, bond technology, and overall result. This post explains what makes Great Lengths different and what the process looks like when you come to us.
Why the Hair Itself Matters More Than Anything
The single most important factor in any hair extension is the hair. Period. If the raw material isn't excellent, nothing else — no bond system, no application method, no aftercare — can save it.
Great Lengths sources 100% of their hair from India, where it's donated voluntarily at temples. This isn't just an ethical story (though it is — fair prices are paid, the proceeds go to charitable purposes, and Great Lengths employs their own sourcing staff on the ground rather than working through brokers). It matters because Indian virgin hair is the finest source available that's compatible with European and Caucasian hair textures.
Every strand is Remy hair, meaning all the cuticles run in the same direction — root to tip — just like your own natural hair. This is critical. Non-Remy hair has cuticles running in random directions, which causes tangling, matting, and a short lifespan regardless of how well the extensions are applied. Great Lengths hair is also double-drawn, which means each strand is the same thickness from root to tip with no wispy, thin ends. The result is hair that looks full, healthy, and genuinely real.
The colour process is equally important. Great Lengths is the only company that uses zero ammonia and zero bleach derivatives to colour their extension hair. They've developed a proprietary pigmentation process that produces colourfast hair without the chemical damage that other manufacturers create. That means the hair arrives at our salon already healthy — we're not starting from a compromised position.

The Bond System: What Holds Everything Together
Great Lengths developed the industry's first pre-tipped synthesised keratin bond polymer back in 1992, and their bond technology remains the benchmark. Here's why it matters.
The keratin bond is specifically engineered to mimic the molecular structure of human hair. This isn't marketing — it has a real functional consequence. Natural hair expands when wet and contracts when dry. If the bond can't do the same thing, it gradually loosens every time you wash your hair until the extensions slip out. Great Lengths' bond expands and contracts with your hair. That's why they stay in securely for 4 to 6 months without slipping, while cheaper extension bonds start shedding within weeks.
At HAIR ETC. STUDIO, we offer two application methods:
Thermal Fusion (The Classic Method)
This is the original Great Lengths method and it's been trusted for over 20 years. A heated applicator (at roughly the same temperature as the lowest setting on a curling iron) softens the keratin bond, which is then moulded around a small section of your natural hair. The bond sets into a tiny, round shape — about the size of a grain of rice — that sits flat against your scalp.
The bonds are completely brushable, comfortable, and invisible to anyone who isn't specifically looking for them. This method is incredibly versatile and works for virtually every hair type, length, and density. It's the method we use most often because of its reliability and the natural-looking volume the round bond shape creates.

Cold Fusion (Ultrasonic Method)
Cold fusion uses ultrasonic waves — not heat — to soften the keratin bond. The vibrations cause the keratin to become malleable, allowing the stylist to mould it into a flat bond shape that fans out and lies extremely close to the head.
This method is especially good for clients with fine or fragile hair, because there's absolutely no heat involved. The flat bond shape also means the attachment points are even less visible, which makes it ideal for clients who wear their hair up frequently. The result is the same Great Lengths hair with the same keratin bond — just applied differently.
GL Tapes: The Flexible Option
For clients who want a quicker transformation or prefer to change their look more frequently, Great Lengths also offers a tape-in system. Two thin extension pieces are placed on either side of a small section of your natural hair, sandwiching it between medical-grade, hypoallergenic adhesive tape.
Tape-ins can be applied in 1 to 2 hours (compared to 3 to 4 hours for fusion methods), and they last 6 to 8 weeks between maintenance appointments. The same Remy human hair. The same quality. Just a different attachment method that suits a different lifestyle. Tapes can be reapplied up to three times, making them a cost-effective option for clients who want flexibility.

What Happens During Your Appointment
Consultation (essential, always free). Every extension service starts with a consultation — no exceptions. We need to see your hair in its natural state to properly assess its type, density, condition, and colour. This is where we discuss what you want to achieve (length, volume, thickness, colour effects), which method is right for your hair and lifestyle, and what the realistic timeline and investment looks like. We'll colour-match from Great Lengths' range of 80+ pre-coloured shades, including rooted options, bronde, balayage effects, and fashion colours.
Application day. For fusion extensions, expect 3 to 4 hours depending on how many strands you need. The process is strand-by-strand — each extension is individually bonded to a small section of your natural hair. It's meticulous, precise work, and it's why the result looks so natural. After application, we do a blending cut to integrate the extensions seamlessly with your own hair.
Maintenance. Fusion extensions need a check-up every 3 to 4 months and typically last 4 to 6 months with proper care. Tape-ins need maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks. We'll walk you through everything you need to know about washing, brushing, and styling your extensions at your appointment.
Removal. When it's time, we use a specialised removal solution that dissolves the keratin bond without damaging your natural hair. This is not a DIY process — always have extensions professionally removed. We then assess your natural hair's condition and discuss whether you'd like a fresh set.

What Extensions Can (and Can't) Do
Extensions are transformative, but it's important to have realistic expectations:
Extensions can add length, volume, and density. They can create colour effects (like balayage or highlights) without any chemical treatment to your natural hair. They can fill in thinning areas. They can give you the hair you've always wanted for a wedding, event, or just everyday life.
Extensions can't fix severely damaged hair (that needs treatment first), work on hair that's too short to support bonds (typically we need at least 8–10cm of natural length), or substitute for good hair care habits. If your natural hair isn't in reasonable condition, we'll be honest about it and work on a plan to get you there first.
The Investment
Great Lengths extensions are a premium service. The cost depends on how many strands you need (which depends on your goals, your natural density, and the method used), the length of extensions, and the stylist tier. A full set of fusion extensions typically represents a significant investment, but when you break it down over the 4 to 6 months they last, it's the daily cost of a coffee for hair that looks and feels incredible every single day.
We quote individually after consultation because every head of hair is different. There's no honest way to give a one-size-fits-all price for extensions — anyone who does is either cutting corners or setting expectations they can't meet.

Why Great Lengths Over Other Brands
We've worked with extensions long enough to know what happens when you compromise on quality. Cheaper hair tangles. Cheaper bonds slip. Cheaper processing means the hair fades, dries out, and looks artificial within weeks. Clients end up spending more money fixing the damage than they would have spent on a quality set in the first place.
Great Lengths has been the global standard since 1992. The hair is ethically sourced and fully traceable — they can tell you exactly where every strand comes from. The bond technology is patented and genuinely superior. The colour range is extensive enough that we can match virtually any natural hair colour without compromise. And the longevity means you're not coming back every six weeks wondering why your extensions look tired.
At HAIR ETC., we'd rather offer one premium option that we're fully confident in than give you five options of varying quality and hope you pick the right one. Great Lengths is the right one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will extensions damage my natural hair?
Not when applied and removed correctly by a trained professional. Great Lengths' keratin bonds are designed to be non-damaging, and we size each bond to your hair's density to ensure your natural hair can comfortably support the extension.
Can I swim, exercise, and live normally?
Yes. Great Lengths extensions handle everything your natural hair can handle. Swimming in the sea, working out, tying your hair up — all fine. The one thing we recommend avoiding is excessive heat directly on the bonds.
Can I colour my extensions?
We strongly recommend against it. Great Lengths hair is pre-coloured using a gentle, proprietary process. Applying salon colour (especially bleach) to extensions voids the quality and can damage the hair. Instead, we colour-match during consultation so your extensions arrive in the perfect shade.
How do I know which method is right for me?
That's what the consultation is for. We assess your hair type, thickness, lifestyle, and goals and recommend the best method. Fine hair often benefits from cold fusion. Thick hair usually does beautifully with thermal. Clients who want a shorter commitment or more flexibility might prefer tapes.
